Arctic Palaeoclimate and its Extremes (APEX) is a network research program aiming to understand Arctic climatic changes beyond instrumental records. The Network’s main objective is to better understand the magnitude and frequency of past Arctic climate variability, especially the “extremes” versus the “normal” conditions of the climate system.
APEX is interdisciplinary and provided a forum for a number of different IPY research projects with participating scientists from 15 European countries, Russia, Canada, USA and Australia. The network is led by a Steering Committee consisting of members from the participating countries and its activities have continued after the IPY.
In particular, the APEX yearly International Workshop and Conference is has grown into an important venue for the exchange of new field results as well as platform to discuss long standing scientific questions on Arctic paleoclimate in a focused manner.
