ICES Journal of Marine Science will turn 100 in 2026. Articles are invited for a special themed set to celebrate this milestone.

In February 1926, the first issue of Journal du Conseil, a new marine science journal, was published in Copenhagen by ICES. Authors in this first issue included no less than Johan Hjort, one of the giants of fisheries biology.

A name change in 1990 to ICES Journal of Marine Science is just one of the ways that the Journal has adapted over the past 99 years, always surfing the changing seascape of marine science, expanding its reach beyond ICES community to include contributions from scientists worldwide. But always carrying forward ICES mission to advance and share scientific understanding of marine ecosystems and the services they provide.

Today, it stands as a leading publication in marine science, reflecting decades of scholarly contributions and editorial dedication, a testament to international cooperation and scientific progress—principles Hjort held dear.

As ICES Journal approaches a century of groundbreaking research in oceanography and fisheries science, you are invited to contribute to a special celebratory issue, the call for articles that explore the past, present, and future of marine science is open.

Howard Browman, Editor-in-Chief welcomes articles that explore the evolution of marine science and the sustainable production and management of marine resources, its current state, or looks to where things are going. Contributions that present innovative approaches and methods that will advance our understanding, offer fresh perspectives on existing problems, theories and hypotheses, explorations of questions that remain unanswered, and novel ideas-hypotheses, including challenges to current thinking are also welcome.
