The eighth edition of SaGAA (Science and Geopolitics of Arctic and Antarctic) is an invite-only conference featuring over 50 distinguished leaders from premier scientific institutes, industry and policy organisations. The Polar regions are facing complex geopolitical tensions and urgent environmental challenges. SaGAA VIII offers a critical platform to advance science diplomacy and communication, offering unified stewardship to safeguard these fragile ecosystems.

Why is it Important: The Conference aims to gain deeper insights into India's interests in the Arctic and Antarctic, and to ideate on the scientific needs for conserving the Himalayan Cryosphere. It connects with pioneering leaders who will help accelerate scientific and geopolitical research on the polar regions.

Who We Are: SaGAA is a Delhi-based think tank founded in 2011 under LIGHTS (Learning in Geography, Humanities, Technology and Science), a Not-for-profit organisation registered as a Society in 2003.  SaGAA pioneers interdisciplinary dialogue at the crossroads of polar science, geopolitics, and policy.

SaGAA’s Background: SaGAA has successfully hosted seven conferences with national and international delegates from various fields. It has published books (Springer) and articles and is widely cited by researchers in India and abroad. SaGAA has helped shape India’s polar research strategies, fostered international scientific collaborations, and assisted in developing India's Arctic Policy. Recently, it has brought out India's first book on 70 years of India's Antarctic History.

Student Competition:
SaGAA VIII is organising a student competition for emerging researchers in polar and cryospheric studies, ranging from atmospheric, oceanic, riverine, and solid-earth research to space science and innovative technology, on the one hand, and policy and international relations, on the other. Students are invited to compete for six prestigious final presentation slots before an elite panel. The winner of this competition will be awarded a certificate and a commemorative embossed plaque in the final session of the Conference.
