UNESCO has launched a Call for Expressions of Interest to establish the governing structures of the Decade of Action for Cryospheric Sciences (2025–2034), a global initiative aimed at strengthening research, cooperation, and action related to the Earth’s cryosphere.
The Decade of Action for Cryospheric Sciences was officially proclaimed to advance international collaboration on snow, ice, glaciers, permafrost, and polar regions, all of which are undergoing rapid and unprecedented change. The initiative seeks to bridge science, policy, and society, ensuring that cryospheric knowledge supports informed decision-making at regional and global levels.
Governing Structures: An Opportunity to Contribute
Through this call, UNESCO invites experts and representatives from relevant communities to express their interest in serving within the Decade’s governing bodies. These structures will help guide the strategic direction, coordination, and implementation of activities throughout the 2025–2034 period.
The call aims to ensure:
- Broad geographic representation
- Interdisciplinary expertise
- Inclusion of early-career researchers
- Engagement of Indigenous Peoples and knowledge holders
- Gender balance and diversity
Selected members will contribute to shaping priorities, fostering international partnerships, and strengthening connections between scientific research and policy processes.
