Marking a significant milestone for Czech polar research, the Czech Arctic Science Consortium (CASC) was officially established on 6 March 2026. This launch marks a definitive step forward in the nation’s polar ambitions, creating a unified front for scientific discovery and international partnership.

czech launchThe consortium serves as the primary engine for the country’s polar community, bringing together nine member institutions, including the Czech Academy of Sciences and the nation's leading universities. As a voluntary national platform, CASC is built to harmonize Czech Arctic research efforts and serve as the official gateway to the International Arctic Science Committee (IASC).

In a significant first step toward international integration, the consortium held its first Council gathering, where Dr. Barbora Halašková (Masaryk University) was officially elected as the Czech Delegate to the IASC Council. She will also serve as the Vice-Chair of CASC, working alongside the newly elected Chair, Dr. Jiří Bárta (University of South Bohemia).

Together, the leadership is focused on boosting the prestige and reach of Czech polar science. Their mission centers on coordinating participation in IASC Working Groups, ensuring a strong national presence within the IASC Council, and building a more robust bridge between academic researchers and governmental stakeholders.

CASC is equally dedicated to the next generation, prioritizing the growth and mentorship of students and early-career researchers. By fostering an open, interdisciplinary environment, the consortium is set to strengthen international ties and ensure the Czech Republic plays a leading role in global milestones, such as the upcoming Fifth International Polar Year (IPY-5). This initiative ensures that Czech research is effectively integrated into the global scientific landscape, paving the way for a more coordinated and impactful contribution to Arctic science.
