Making science fun, inspiring and important in day-to-day life is a challenging, but important task for all scientists. It can be a powerful communication tool, especially when combined with artistic vision. After almost two years of hard work and exchanging ideas between permafrost scientists and professional artists, we are excited to present the project ‘Frozen-Ground Cartoons’, kindly supported by IASC.
The main objective of this non-traditional scientific outreach project is to present permafrost research conducted in the field with thematic cartoons (more than 20 pages in total), and is targeted to youth, parents and teachers. The project is coordinated by a core group of permafrost early-career researchers from Canada and Europe, and the cartoons are realized by two professional artists from Finland and Canada.
The ‘Frozen-Ground Cartoons’ project received initial support from the International Permafrost Association (IPA) as a targeted ‘Action Group’, and since then several other partners have joined the project, including the Terrestrial and Cryosphere Working Groups from IASC.
We are now at the stage of compiling the cartoons into a 28-page booklet, including artist bios, project history, a permafrost glossary, and more. This will be ready for distribution by the end of 2017.
