Project Description

The 6th International PalaeoArc Conference (on ‘Processes and Palaeo-environmental changes in the Arctic: from Past to Present’) will be held at UiT The Arctic University of Norway in Tromsø from the 2nd to the 5th of June 2025. PalaeoArc is an international research network aiming to better understand climatically induced environmental changes in the Arctic from the Quaternary to present, following four themes focusing on 1) Arctic ice sheets, ice shelves and glaciers, 2) high latitude oceans and sea ice, 3) the terrestrial environments and ecosystems, and 4) the climatic response to, and interaction between, these parts of the Arctic system. At the heart of the PalaeoArc network are the annual meetings, recognised for combining high scientific level with inclusivity across career stages, countries and disciplines. The PalaeoArc conference use a single-track schedule instead of thematic or parallel sessions, stimulating discussions between researchers from different fields of Arctic science. The registration fee includes a mid-conference excursion, exposing the participants to the spectacular north Norwegian fjord and alpine landscape and providing an informal setting for networking and scientific discussions. The Tromsø area offers a wide range of landscapes/landsystems highly relevant for the PalaeoArc community and its research themes. The excursion will take the participants to key localities used to understand and explain climatically induced environmental changes during and after the last ice age. In gathering ~100 Arctic scientists working on diverse marine, terrestrial, and cryospheric topics, the conference will facilitate the creation and exchange of knowledge within Arctic science change, promote new collaborative relationships, foster the next generation of polar science leaders, and stimulate discussions around the direction and remit of the network over the next 5 years.
