Project Description
A joint project of the Arctic Council Arctic Monitoring and Assessment Programme (AMAP) and the Conservation of Arctic Flora and Fauna (CAFF) Working Groups has been established to assess how climate change affects Arctic ecosystems, feedbacks of ecosystem change on Arctic climate, and the implications of these changes for northern communities and livelihoods. Findings are intended to inform strategies for climate change adaptation and resiliency, including threats to food security and health. Findings also fold back into improved representation of Arctic ecosystem processes in climate models. The study is inclusive of Arctic marine, freshwater, and terrestrial ecosystems and ecosystem services.
AMAP and CAFF are aiming to advance knowledge and develop products that are responsive to the Arctic Council States’ and Permanent Participants’ priorities regarding climate change, ecosystem resilience, and conservation of biodiversity. This maps strongly onto the priorities of several IASC working groups, particularly how circum-Arctic Indigenous Peoples are being affected by climate change and associated impacts on species, ecosystems, health, and livelihoods.
