Project Description
The international science community is ramping up efforts to address challenges imposed by Arctic climate and ecosystem changes and their implications for societies at large. The 5th International Polar Year (IPY) is soon entering into the project phase culminating in 2032-33 in a two-year period of intensive polar fieldwork observations, experiments, analysis, as well as education and outreach activities.
Access to research infrastructures is essential to access Arctic environments and communities, and to address the scientific aims and societal challenges across Arctic landscapes and climate zones. Linking science and infrastructure is thus central for reaching the key objectives of the IPY.
The aim of the project is to design an IPY Arctic Access Programme (IPY-AAP) which would provide access for researchers to Arctic research infrastructures and their data, supporting scientific advancement and addressing societal challenges both during the IPY ramp-up phase and throughout the International Polar Year. Infrastructures involved in the programme can include terrestrial research stations, polar vessels and data infrastructures. INTERACT can provide a tested framework for the IPY Arctic Access Programme, including coordination, management and outreach, and its digital platforms. In its planning phase, it is crucial to ensure that the IPY Arctic Access Programme addresses IPY specific needs and priorities.
INTERACT therefore seeks to form a group of partners to design the IPY-AAP, including the IASC Working Groups, APECS, Indigenous Peoples representatives and others. Together, partners will explore the programme’s design and organisation, including research priorities, coordination and governance, and the selection process.
The main outcomes and milestones of the co-design process are:
- Organisation a Workshop to design an IPY-AAP
- Publication of a concept paper describing the IPY-AAP
- Creation of materials for reaching out to funding entities
- Presentation of the IPY Arctic Access Programme concept at ASSW 2027
