Project Description
The biennial Gordon Research Conference on Polar Marine Science is the only recurring meeting that brings together scientists working in both the Arctic and Southern Oceans, generating invaluable cross-pollination of these two communities working on similar problems in these separate environments. The format of the Gordon Conferences, with in-person attendance in an isolated location, extensive space in the schedule for discussion, and strong prohibitions against recording or releasing presentations and discussions, allows for free and open exchange of new and unpolished ideas and hypotheses. Thus, these Gordon Conferences are highly effective in fostering exploration of the cutting-edge of polar marine sciences.
A Gordon Research Seminar on Polar Marine Science for early career scientists will be held immediately preceding the main conference. This seminar is organized by two early career scientists and provides a unique opportunity for graduate students and post-doctoral researchers to present their work, discuss cutting-edge ideas, and develop collaborative networks. Experienced leaders from the scientific community will provide mentoring, while moderators from the early career community will facilitate interactions and active participation in scientific discussion. The two-day seminar will provide a valuable networking opportunity to these young scientists, which they will then be able to carry into the main conference and their subsequent careers.
